Thanks. Strangely, it's apparently started working again without (as far as I know) my doing anything about it. One of them there caprices of the computer gods, maybe. I'll remember to try the Apple Support forums if/when a problem like this comes up again, thanks.

That's very strange. I'm thinking that the settings file may have gotten corrupted or locked somehow. Unfortunately, I away from my office on a computer that doesn't have Snow Leopard running with a second monitor, so I can't hunt down the file you may need to delete. You might want to try looking in the Library folder in your Home folder for a preference setting file that includes the word "display" in its name. Deleting that and restarting may clear the settings and enable you to reset them again. But I haven't tried this so you may not find such a file and deleting it may not work.

A better suggestion might be to post your question in the Apple Support forums. Good luck!

I came to this page searching on

"gather windows" arrangement

I have always had a big screen beside my laptop in my office, more recently one above it at home, and it used to be that the arrangement configuration would switch automatically and correctly when I went from one location to the other. Now, however, I have to set this manually every time I move, which is once a day in each location. I don't know what went wrong, but one thing that might provide a hint is that while the second screen automatically moves to the side from the bottom when I go to the office, it's on the wrong side, on the right rather than the left. Can anyone perhaps advise me on this? I'm using Snow Leopard, OS X 10.6.3. Thanks.

I'm afraid I mis-understood the word "mirroring"... My ibook already produced the exact same image on the external screen, but I want it to produce a mirror immage, that is REVERSE I guess, like what you see when you look in a mirror. Is it possible to have the laptop screen normal and the external screen reverse? How? I have now installed screen-spanning-docter, but that is not the solution. I do get the mirror-button now, but as I said, this just copies the screen, what it already did.

Hi, I've read your article and I have the same problem as Tim: my ibook g4 does not have "arrangement" nor "mirroring" in the menu. I want the external monitor to mirror the original laptop screen, but all I get is an exact copy (klone) Do I need aditional software or firmware or something?? I have everything connected and powered, but no arrangement or mirroring apears.

I am trying to add a 20" Viewsonic monitor to my iMac I purchased earlier this year. I have followed the above steps, have viewed several online videos and I am getting no picture on the second monitor. I just get a message that says "No Signal - Analog" but my iMac pics up the connection and gives me the "Arrangement" option and lists the Viewsonic monitor in a seperate window when I click the "Gather Windows" button under display. Help.

Hi, does anyone know if macbooks can be setup to use a network projector for presentations? A search of apple, and a good hour on google hasnt shown much. We use epson powerlites with a cat5 port and want people to be able to use their laptops across the network for presentations but there just isnt any info. Infocus projectors now have a little usb port for the projector and one for the projecting laptop but we only have epsons :( the newer versions of windows provide a nice "connect to network projector" program but I cant find something like that on macbooks.

Tim: The Arrangement options will only appear if the second monitor (the projector, in your case) is attached and powered up and mirroring is turned off. Hope this helps.

My imac doesn't have the "arrangement" box in the displays option. I want to present through a projector on external screen and continue to work on other stuff on my main screen. Is there a way to do this ??

In the Displays preferences pane, drag the title bar to the display you want it to appear on . That becomes the primary display.

Some great advice here, thanks.

When using another display how would I get the main windows for say 'InDesign' to show in the other window rather than just in the window of the macbook that I opened them on?
