I am new to Mac and have your on Leopard. However there is much missing (as you yourself have commented) from the book. I would like to know why, when I set up Smart Mailboxes, items are copied to them instead of moved to them, and can this be changed from “copy” to “move”?
Also, why, when I had Firefox & Thunderbird established and working, did they disappear from my system when I downloaded and installed the latest updates to Leopard?
So much to learn and such little time to learn it …….where might I find an informative forum for veteran MS converts to Mac?
……. why does hitting the “end” “home” keys not move the cursor to the end of the line of text….etc.?
tnx jerry

Jerry, thanks for your comment. In the future, however, please post your questions about my Mac OS X Leopard book where it will be seen by others who can benefit from my answers: in the Q&A post for the book. You can find it at: http://www.mariasguides.com/2006/01/01/q-a/
I’m sorry the book is missing the information you seek. Unfortunately, my publisher gave me a maximum page count (which I exceeded anyway) and we had to limit what was included.
I don’t know WHY Apple chose to have smart mailboxes copy messages rather than move them. There is no way to change this behavior using the Smart Mailbox feature. Instead, try setting up rules; that’s what I do.
I have no idea why you are having trouble with Firefox and Thunderbird. They were not included in the book because they are not part of Mac OS X. They are third party applications. You need to get help from the developers who distribute them.
As for “switcher” help, try a Google search for “Switch from PC to Mac” (without the quotes). You should come up with lots of resources.
Finally, using the End and Home keys has different functionality with different applications and different features. The best way to learn how to use movement keys like Home, End, and the arrow keys is by consulting an application’s documentation or simply experimenting.
Hope some of this helps you!

Maria, There remains serious confusion on Time Machine and whatever that other Apple backup system is. Even working with AppleCare, you get different techniques to solve problems such as re-installing Leopard….some say use Time Machine and other tech support folks don’t. A book that really goes into this mess of a backup would be a good seller because users are dependent and TimeMachine, frankly, either doesn’t work or there is inadequate information out there for how to MAKE it work.

I would be interested in an ebook or manual focused on Apple’s Darwin implementation of the UNIX backbone to MacOS X. In particular, I am interested in learning how to interpret and correct errors that occur during the Leopard startup sequence, which seems to cause prolonged delays in booting OS X 10.5.x.
