It's actually highly unreliable to change that setting, and Apple has specifically said that they'll never fix this.

Of course, when I asked if they would buy back the AirPort Extremes sold under the lure of using them with Time Machine when pre-orders were flying in for Leopard... Apple declined to comment.

I totally sympathize with your frustration. Apple is acting very un-Apple-like these days and it's got me worried.

Personally, I believe they will add this feature back. It would certainly make the AirPort Extreme more valuable and give AirPort Extreme users an extra reason to upgrade to Leopard. It'll probably be added with an update. At least I hope so.

Personally, I went with a 500 GB USB hard disk for my Time Machine backup. And I'll continue to create an off-premises backup of my most important documents on my iDisk.

If Apple were to not work towards compatability with Airport Disk, that would be a major affront to me. I spent a great deal more for the Extreme base station specifically for that feature. It was bad enough when the last firmware update for the AEBS somehow prevented the external drive from mounting. Finally, after hunting around various boards, I followed a tip to revert back to a previous firmware version, and my backups are operational again. That was the most Windows-like, which is to say counter-intuitive, experience I have had since converting to Mac. I could have bought a $50 Belkin like I am using at my office.
