An excerpt from Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger: Visual QuickStart Guide.
In an effort to trim some fat from my Mac OS X book for its Leopard revision, we decided to cut the existing Unix chapter from the Tiger book. This freed up 44 pages for new material about Leopard’s new features.
But there’s nothing wrong with this older material. It’s still pretty much valid. So rather than discard it forever, we decided to make it available as a free download in PDF format.
So here’s Chapter 19: Unix Basics for Mac OS X. Enjoy!

Thanks Maria - this is just the part of my new mac that I know least about. This is going to be really useful.

Thanks. A nice touch. A very useful and thorough chapter and nice to see the effort continues and it’s appreciated. Interesting comment on the nature of the readership that the UNIX chapter is of lessened priority…must be that the anticipated users of Leopard are just much more UNIX savvy and have moved beyond such basics ;-) Kidding aside, I sense there probably is a shift in the nature of the Leopard market.
On a side note, I went to pick up my copy yesterday at my university bookstore. I remember the Saturday launch for Tiger last go around and, although a lonely Apple employee was there, they sold 8 copies on a sleepy day. Anticipating the same I showed up just prior to 6pm and got ticket 41. The manager only received 40 out of a order for 80. So, yes, I was denied. Great to see the sea change if only in this annecdotal case. Thinking back to System 7 launch, the comparison is even more dramatic. Times have changed.

Glad to be able to share this chapter with everyone. We pulled it from the book to make room for new stuff. The book came in a bit lighter than we expected, but I still think the average Mac user doesn’t really NEED to know about Unix. (I certainly don’t.)
I missed the Leopard launch. I was at an aviation event for the weekend. I hope to get my official copy of Leopard today.
