I need to learn about it for a book I’m writing, so when Maria Langer wrote about Twitter the other day I commented, and then Maria wrote a whole introduction / tutorial: Four Steps to Get the Most Out of Twitter. Twitter is also a social networking tool. I participate because I find it interesting to see what other people do and think throughout their day. I leave the Twitterific window open — I have a 20″ monitor, so there’s enough real estate for it — and peek at it once in a while. And then I tweet when I have something to say. I think my view as a microblogging tool is a result of my self-imposed limitations on its use. I probably tap into a small part of what it does. I'm still in the experimental stage, but I think it'll be a long-term experiment. Thanks VERY MUCH for the Twitterfeed tip. I just set it up. It'll automate the process of tweeting new posts. I'd take issue with your description of Twitter as a micro-blogging tool. It is more than that. I usually describe it as blogging-lite, IM-lite, location-lite, and status broadcast. And it can lead to a lot of serendipitous moments. I've arranged quite a few meetups through Twitter already. As for Twitterific (and since I feature in your screenshot!)... I haven't tried the latest version yet. I used to use Twitterlex for Dashboard, since it issued Growl alerts, and the old version of Twitterific didn't... but the new one does, so I might give it another look. If you want to automatically tweet your new blog posts, check out Mario Menti's Twitterfeed. I do agree with your central point here - Twitter *is* useful, even though it might seem like a monumental waste of time! :-) Maria, good summary.
