Don’t bother Spotlight Now — It’s Indexing

What?

ImageI just did something I do every day on my G5 running Tiger: I clicked the Spotlight icon as a first step for searching for a file. And this is what I saw.

Okay, so Spotlight has to index. But why now? The damn computer was on all night long. Why couldn’t it do it then.

And can you see the estimated time? 75 hours! Okay, so a few minutes later, it was down to 25 hours. And now, a few minutes later, it says just 7 hours. What am I supposed to do about finding files while it’s working?

Well, the good news is, the Finder’s Find command still works and it found the files I was looking for.

But I still think the message shown here is weird and I wonder what prompted Spotlight to re-index the entire hard disk.

I hope it’s not something I should be worried about.
