Maria,

I am using Wordpress.com 2.7 and subscribe to Lynda.com and followed your tutorial. I am trying to add a link and it shows that the link was added but does not appear on my blog. I don't know what I am doing wrong. My blog site is socalboxing.wordpress.com The link I am trying to add is http://standnfight.com/ I also tried http://www.standnfight.com/ but again it shows that it was added but does not appear on my blog. I didn't see anyone asking this question here, so can you help me out?

The picture you want to use must be sized to fit where you want it to go. You can either size it in your image editing program or include height and width tags in the HTML you use to put it on your site.

Make sure the image is on your server in the location you specified using the code on page 190 (for an author photo) or 198 (for a WebCam image or other image).

If this doesn't work, check your code. If you make a mistake by even one character, it won't work.

This code is correct as presented in the book. I use the Author image instructions and code on two of my WordPress-based blogs and the WebCam/image instructions on several blogs. If it's not working for you, either you've got the wrong path to the image file or the wrong code.

Good luck!

Johnny, I'm not sure what directions you're referring to. Please give me a page reference so I can help you. Also, are you using WordPress.com or your own WordPress installation on a server? The instructions for modifying the sidebar do not work on WordPress.com blogs.

Stuart, sorry we weren't clearer. The truth of the matter is, you don't need to include a trackback link in a post. Trackbacks have been pretty much replaced by pingbacks, which work automatically. When you write a post that includes a link to another post on your blog or another blog, a pingback is automatically sent to that other post as a comment. Ditto for other people linking to yours. There's a really good tutorial about it here:

http://www.optiniche.com/blog/117/wordpress-trackback-tutorial/

Hope this helps!

Hi Maria,

Thanks for your book, it was a great help in getting started with WordPress and setting up my greenpolitics.ca site.

I'm not clear about how to use trackbacks as they are not clearly explained in the book.

When I go to the Index it quotes the same pages references for trackbacks as for comments, but there is only scant mention of trackbacks on these pages.

Where do I find and put a trackback link? Do I copy it from a blog I am reading and then paste it into my own blog?

Or, if I am writing a post, do I put a trackback link at the bottom or top of the post? Can I do that with a WordPress php tag in the theme template for a post page?

Do explain!

I've used WordPress as a true CMS for my Flying M Air Web site (http://www.flyingmair.com/). I wrote about it in a long series of articles on this site; just use the search feature (top of sidebar) to search for CMS and you should find them.

Unfortunately, I know nothing about shopping carts and rather like it that way. I have no idea if WordPress would support them or if a plugin or other "canned" solution is available to help out. You're on your own there.

I also have no experience with specific CMS software packages, so I don't know what they could do for you and can't advise you. Sorry!

I know a little about a lot of things, a lot about a few things, and absolutely nothing about the rest. There's only so much that can fit in my brain.

Good luck! You have your work cut out for you.

Maria! Thanks for the follow up... have now started to figure this all out. Had to divert onto other products and now making progress in the templates.

I know my next question is not 100% appropriate, but you being the WP Guru, maybe you can give me an opinion... I have been asked to set up a simple CMS site including shopping cart, special category pages plus some static pages. There is much hoo-ha as to whether one can/should use WP2.1 as a CMS, or rather use a CMS-specific application.

I have tried a few systems with varying results, and am looking for something intuitive and relatively easy to install & configure. EG. tried TextPattern and was totally underwhelmed, and Joomla, but my host won't unlock PHP Safe Mode so I can't upload or customize templates. Hmm!

Forgive the tangent!

Many thanks

I'm glad you solved your spelling checker problem, but it still doesn't explain why I can see the button and you can't. I wish I could duplicate the problem!

As for what you saw when you clicked the Submit Comment button, I can only guess that it was a captcha. Did it display an image of characters and ask you to type them in a box? If so, that's the captcha that's part of SpamKarma 2. It doesn't appear for me since Spam Karma "knows" me. The purpose of the feature is to prevent automated commenting software from successfully posting a spam comment on this site. Since it requires human intervention -- someone to read the characters in the graphics -- anyone able to complete the little puzzle is not likely to be a piece of software.

If you're talking about something else, please describe it. When I click Submit Comment, the comment is simply submitted, so I don't see anything else here.

thank you for responding to my question regarding the "toggle spell checker button" you asked what browser I am using? Internet Explore. I uploaded Mozilla Firefox and the spell checker button still does not appear; however, Mozilla provides an interactive spell check. Solved.

Could you explain the purpose of the page which appears immediately after you click - Submit Comment below, and is this something which is available on Wordpress?

I don't understand why you aren't seeing this button. I double-checked this just today on a WordPress 2.1 server installation and the WordPress.com Web site. The button appears, just as it's illustrated in our book.

What Web browser are you using? Perhaps that's the problem? I know that some older Web browsers don't support the JavaScript that's used to display the buttons properly. If you don't have the most current version of whatever browser you're using, try upgrading and taking another look. If that doesn't help (or even if it does!) please let me know here. We'll troubleshoot this together; perhaps another user checking in can shed some light on the problem, too.
