Out-of-Print Books Q & A

Have a question about something in one of my out-of-print books? Here’s how to get the answer:

  1. Browse through the comments at the end of this article to see if someone else has already asked your question. You might get the answer without even asking!
  2. If your question is not asked (or answered), use the Leave a Comment form at the bottom of this post to enter your question. (If the form does not appear, click the Comment link below to display it.)
  3. Check in once in a while to see if your question is answered. I usually answer questions within 48 hours, unless I’m out of town. To have responses to your question delivered to you automatically by e-mail, along with other Q & A comments submitted for this book, turn on the Notify Me check box at the bottom of the form when submitting your question (step 2). You can unsubscribe to the notification feature at any time.

Please do not use the Contact form to ask me questions. I won’t answer them. I want the questions and answers here, where everyone can see them, so I don’t have to answer the same questions over and over again.

Unfortunately, since my out-of-print books cover software that is no longer current, I probably don’t have it installed on my computer. I’ll do my best to answer your questions, but can’t make any promises.

    Maria,

I have a question regarding the “Publishing an iTunes-Compatible Podcast” guide and I didn’t know where else to leave it.

I just read your Mac OS X Tiger Quickstart Guide and was totally blown away! I have since explored your site and encountered a reference to the guide above. It is no longer available via the link given in the free introduction and I was wondering how I may otherwise purchase the guide.

    Thanks,

    Mike

Unfortunately, that eBook is no longer available. It’s a bit out of date and I’ve since come up with better ways to publish a podcast. I have not had time to update the eBook and re-release it.

I expect to get to it sometime in October. Right now, I’ve got my hands full with Leopard. Sorry!

    Hi Maria,

I’m from Italy. I bought you book Mac OSX 10.4 Tiger because I changed PC for Mac G5 some months ago.

Your book is very clear and it helped and helps me very much to introduce me in the fantastic world of Mac

I bought also an external disk (250 GB).

That disk is already full (I justa have 2 GB free) but I can’t cancel files to have again my 230-240GB back. I found in your book empty trash and empty trash safety mode tools but this things didn’t work.

Practically I do the following proccedure:

    1) I put files into the trash

    2) files disapear from external disk

    3) I go to the trash and do empty trash or empty trash in safety mode but files aren’t cancelled from the external disk. Why?

With PC I had the tool “format” to cancell definitively information from the disk. There is the same thing for Mac?

Can you help me? I’m not so good yet with Mac.

    Thank you very much

To delete (your word is “cancel” if I understand you right) a file, you drag it to the Trash and empty the Trash. You don’t need to use the Secure Empty Trash feature, which I think you’re referring to as “safety mode.” Secure empty trash is a security feature that prevents users from undeleting files you don’t need that. Just use the regular Empty Trash command. It should work.

If it doesn’t work, I don’t know what the problem is and I can’t help you.

If you want to erase (format) the entire external disk, you can do that with Disk Utility, which I discuss in the book on page 648 (in the English edition).

    Good luck!

    Hello Maria,

Please help if you can!? I try to store photos on my desktop but they are sucked up by a mysterious folder labeled, “rotating images” which has recently found a home in my eMac. Iv’e contacted APPLE and quite a few other sources but no one has an answer.

If I trash it, it just reappears on it’s own.

I’m sorry. I have no idea what might be causing this. I tried a Google search and came up empty handed. It sounds like a virus, but there’s no record of such a thing.

The only thing I can suggest is that you post it on the Apple support discussion boards.

Is the Quicken 2007 book (referring to Windows) useful for a novice user of Quicken 2007 on a Mac?

    Thank you.

    Ilona

  • 8 Maria Langer // Aug 24, 2007 at 11:49 am

All of my Quicken for Windows books are suitable for Windows only.

    So

the only instructions and support for a Mac user is the User Guide as a pdf included with the software? I can’t find anything esle over the internet or in book stores.

Thank you for the quick response earlier.

    Re: Quicken for Mac

Yes, that’s probably the case. My Quicken 2001 for Mac book was never revised because it simply didn’t sell enough copies.

Thank you for the information. Sorry it was not revised.

I acquired a copy of your book, “Quicken 2004″ which advertises online worksheets, links, and FAQs. I’m trying to find them on your site but can’t. Thanks for any help you can give

  • 13 Maria // Nov 21, 2007 at 6:20 am

Ken, I no longer support my Quicken books here. All support is available on the Osborne Web site. That’s where those worksheets should be.

I’m out of town now for the holidays; when I get back, I’ll try to get a direct link for you. I the meantime, look for my Quicken book at http://www.osborne.com/ — you may find the files you seek there.

Also, that book is now 4 years old and long out of print. Don’t be surprised if the worksheets you find don’t correspond to that edition.

The last book you wrote for Quicken for the Mac was in 2002 - which I have. When are you going to write an updated version for the Mac?

I love your books and have several of them, since you explain things so well.

  • 15 Maria Langer // Apr 16, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Robert, you’re right: the 2002 edition was the last one for my Quicken Mac book. It simply didn’t sell enough copies to warrant revision. Sorry to disappoint you. And thanks very much for the kind words about my books.

I have a question about your Quicken 2008 book that I have just finished reading. I have a question about the pay check setup feature. Where can I post the questions?

  • 17 Maria Langer // Apr 27, 2008 at 3:47 pm

I do not provide support for my Quicken books on this or any other Web site. If you have a question about Quicken, your best bet is to visit Intuit’s Web site and explore the support options there. Good luck!
