Jeff, unless you have a good understanding of Excel, it's difficult to explain (beyond my article) how to set up a random number generator. My advice: learn the basics of Excel and come back to the article. I think you'll be able to put it to good use then. Good luck!

I am a computer beginner. I have Excel, within a suite of programs, but I've never used it. Can you tell me how I could use it to automatically generate random numbers, as Ive seen you discuss? I just don't understand it all. Sorry, Maria; and thank you!

I no longer have the files for the Excel 2001 VQS. That book is about 7 years old and long out of print.

The files you find here SHOULD work: <a href="http://www.mariasguides.com/2005/09/06/excel-20032004-quickstart-sample-files/" title="Read: Excel 2003/2004 QuickStart Sample Files" rel="nofollow">Excel 2003/2004 QuickStart Sample Files</a>

EXCELLENT question, S! I apparently forgot to put them online. Odd that you're the first person asking for them.

Here's the link to where you can find them now:

http://www.mariasguides.com/2007/01/25/excel-2007-visual-quickstart-guide-sample-files/

Thanks for keeping me honest!

I no longer have Excel 2000; Excel 2007 is the current version. I did write an Excel 2000 book (seven years ago) and covered that feature on page 212. To my knowledge, however, the warning dialog that you're probably seeing cannot be disabled in Excel 2000. In later versions, there is a preferences setting to disable it. Sorry I can't be more help.

This topic is not covered at all in the book you have. That book was written based on Excel 2003 for Windows and Excel 2004 for Mac OS.

I no longer have access to Excel 2000, but my Excel 2000 Visual QuickStart Guide clearly shows a Gridlines option under Print in the Sheet tab of the Page Setup dialog (page 173). If that's turned on for the sheet you want to print, gridlines on that sheet should print. If they don't, I'm afraid I don't know what the problem is.

Good luck!
